The grass might be growing now, but when the first new ball is taken after the end of the COVID-19 lockdown, Homestead Park at Shailer Park will be in pristine condition for the resumption of cricket matches.
Club management said the Springwood Suns Cricket Club is making good use of the down time to upgrade facilities and improve playing conditions for all cricketers.
Marion Young, a Suns committee member, said the club has been in ‘constant contact’ with Mick de Brenni, Springwood MP and State Sports Minister, who is overseeing a number of programs to help sporting clubs during the pandemic.
Mrs Young said the club received money to
realign the Field Three pitch from East-West to North-South and also to extend field boundaries.
“We were also successful with the Council’s Maintenance Grant which will now see new floor coverings for the kitchen and bar area,” Mrs Young said.
“This job has gone to a local company, so we are putting club money back into our local community.”
Despite no official word, the winter cricket season is unlikely to be played, Mrs Young said, the club is looking to restructure membership fees and retain members.
“The fields are looking great and will be ready for when we return.”
